Safety is always a major concern to my relocation buyers that are moving to Michigan. That is so important to home buyers relocating to Michigan.  Yes we have cities that have high crime rates like Inkster, Pontiac, and Detroit.  But we have so many more safe cities like Livonia, Rochester, or Milford.  One of the best ways to find out about safe cities in Michigan is call your local insurance agent.  Your car insurance and home owners insurance cost correlates to the crime rate in the area.

There is a high cost to living in the city of Detroit that many people do not know about.  Your car insurance and home owners insurance is going to be very high as compared to some of the surrounding suburbs.  A local insurance agent will be able to tell you some of the lower cost insurance areas in Michigan.  So pick up the phone and call a State Farm agent, a Progessive agent, an All State agent or any insurance agent.   Ask them where the high insurance rate areas are.  This is just another tool in helping you find a great home when moving to Michigan.

I am going to talk about the sex offender's list first.  There is a website out there that you can search if there is a sex offender in the area you are looking at.  There is such a huge number of sex offenders any more that it is impossible to move to any city without finding somebody on the list.  The reason somebody may be on the list may be as simple as urinating in public or a high school senior dating and having sex with a high school sophomore.  The key for you as a home buyer is to do a little research on how serious the sex offender's crime was.  Was it a young guy that got caught urinating on a wall or was it a pediphile?  Like I said it is almost impossible to find areas anymore where there is not somebody on the list that lives nearby.

What cities near Detroit have high crime rates?

Once you identify the high crime areas that you definitely do not want to live in then think about the surrounding areas.  Many time those bad areas extend a little farther.  The crime in Detroit does not just stop at the city's border.  Many times it will extend into the next city around it.  There may be a certain mile road or street that you want to stay north, west, or south of.  That next city may have areas that have higher crime than other areas.  If you are worried about crime in an area pick up the phone and call that city's police department.  Talk to them about your concerns and get an answer to your questions and worries.

One of the biggest ways to learn about the area is too talk to the neighbors when looking at a home.  See what they say about the neighborhood.  They are even more valuable than me.  They will be able to give you inside information about the house, the neighborhood, and the crime in the neighborhood.

Sometimes websites scare some of my relocation clients.  They may label a city as a high crime area when it is not.  For example Ann Arbor is a college town.  It may have a higher crime rating even though it is a safe city and a great city to live in.  The crime stats may be skewed because of the incidents of crime on the college campus.  Rapes between the students on campaus, breakins of dorms may skew the crime statistics.  There may be one section of the city that is bad and has a high crime rate.  You won't want to live in that part of the city but you may like the part of the far side of the city.  Again it may pay to pick up the phone or to talk to people to allay your fears.

It is my goal to help you find the city that is safe for you and your family.  It may take a little more research on your part to make you feel comfortable.  That is key when buying a home here in the Metro Detroit area.
