Clarkston is another of southeastern Michigan cities that is sometimes lumped together with other townships / communities. Sometimes people in Springfield Township and Independence Township say they live in Clarkston. Clarkston is just a small town. But for today I am also going to include the other townships too. Clarkston proper is only a couple miles in size. It has a small downtown with some stores, restaurants, and businesses in. Not a huge downtown area but a nice one and worth going to some of the restaurants there.
It is a safe community to live in. You are going to find that the surrounding communities are very safe too. They are some what rural. Many of the homes sit on bigger lots and acreage. There are farms and woods all around Clarkston. I would call the surrounding communities more rural. You are going to have to travel a ways to shop, or go out to eat sometimes. The area is not urban in most senses. You may have to travel to Great Lake Crossing and all the shopping off Baldwin Road to satisfy your shopping itch.
So let's talk about how safe Clarkston is.
The rate of crime in Clarkston is 16.03 per 1,000 residents during a standard year. Village of Clarkston is safer than the Michigan state average and safer than the national average.
With a crime rate for both violent and property crime combined of 5 per 1,000 residents, the crime rate in Village of Clarkston is one of the lower rates in America among communities of all sizes (lower than 82% of America's communities). One's chance of becoming a victim of crime in Village of Clarkston is one in 184. Village of Clarkston crime rates are 68% lower than the national average · Violent crimes in Village of Clarkston are 50% lower than the national average. According to safe wise Springfield Township was ranked as the 8th safest town in Michigan and Independence Township was ranked 32nd.
Michigan has a higher violent crime rate than 37 states. I think a lot of the violent crimes occur in our bigger cities in the state. Bay City, Flint, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and Detroit contribute heavily to the violent crime statistics. Half of Michigan residents feel safe here. The increase in experiences with violent crime and gun violence might account for the higher daily level of high concern compared to last year.
Bottom Line is Clarkston MI is safe, Springfield Township MI is safe, and Independence Township is safe. They are good places to live and very safe for your family. No gangs, no drive by shootings, no drug dealers dealing drugs on the street. Nobody running shooting up the town, or abandoned burnt out homes being used as drug houses. Clarkston, Springfield, and Independence are just not that type of communities. They will be places you will be glad you moved to.
