Clarkston is another of southeastern Michigan cities that is sometimes lumped together with other townships / communities. Sometimes people in Springfield Township and Independence Township say they live in Clarkston. Clarkston is just a small town. But for today I am also going to include the other townships too. Clarkston proper is only a couple miles in size. It has a small downtown with some stores, restaurants, and businesses in. Not a huge downtown area but a nice one and worth going to some of the restaurants there.
It is a safe community to live in. You are going to find that the surrounding communities are very safe too. They are some what rural. Many of the homes sit on bigger lots and acreage. There are farms and woods all around Clarkston. I would call the surrounding communities more rural. You are going to have to travel a ways to shop, or go out to eat sometimes. The area is not urban in most senses. You may have to travel to Great Lake Crossing and all the shopping off Baldwin Road to satisfy your shopping itch.
So let's talk about how safe Clarkston is.

Michigan has a higher violent crime rate than 37 states. I think a lot of the violent crimes occur in our bigger cities in the state. Bay City, Flint, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and Detroit contribute heavily to the violent crime statistics. Half of Michigan residents feel safe here. The increase in experiences with violent crime and gun violence might account for the higher daily level of high concern compared to last year.
