South Lyon Relocation
If you are moving to Michigan to be close to family or because of a new job then a South Lyon relocation may be for you if you are looking for reasonable house. South Lyon is still semi rural. It really started booming in the 1990's. It is on southwestern edge of Oakland County near the crossroads of Interstate 96 and US 23. Brighton is about 10 minutes away, Ann Arbor about 20 minute drive, Lansing, the capital of Michigan is located less than an hour drive west, and Detroit is just 45- miles to the east It would be a good hour drive into downtown Detroit. The population was 11,327
South Lyon is a small town and you are going to have to drive to get to major shopping. Yes, there are grocery stores, fast food restaurants, and hardware stores here. But there are no national chain stores here. It is going to be anywhere from a 10 minute drive to get to the Milford shopping area along I-96 and a 15 -20 minute ride to get to the mega shopping area 12 Oaks Mall. There is also the outlet mall in Green Oaks Township that is about 15 minutes away. The center of the business district is at Ten Mile Road and Pontiac Trail, known as Lake Street and Lafayette Street within the City.
South Lyon Michigan is just 3.5 square miles in size, but I am also including Lyon Township which is many times considered "South Lyon". The city because it was further drive did not develop until home prices in Northville, Novi, and Plymouth became too expensive for younger buyers.
It was a farming community. There still is an active farm called Erwin Orchards that has great apples. There are quite a few horse farms around the city. It was agricultural center built around two railroads and incorporated as a city in 1930. What is nice about South Lyon is that there is no major industrial areas. Yes it does have some light industrial industry, but you are not going to see any big ugly plants here. If you would like a South Lyon relocation guide email me at yesmyrealtor@gmail.com
If you are relocating to South Lyon Michigan it is a small town that is known for its historic and charming downtown, annual festivals, top-notch parks and excellent schools, the City of South Lyon offers an unparalleled quality of life. You will like the South Lyon Hotel for a dinner and a drink. Do not let the name fool you. Years ago it was a hotel, but now it is only a restaurant/bar. It is a small downtown only a few blocks long.
If you look at the largest employers you will see that there are no large companies here in the city. These are the largest employers
1. South Lyon School District
2. Michigan Seamless Tube
3. South Lyon Hotel
4. Sun Steel Treating
5. Busch's
So why would you relocate to South Lyon or Lyon Township
- Affordable housing - you can get more house for your money than in some of other western Metro Detroit cities.
- Properties with space - if you want a pole barn, a horse farm, or a home with acreage you can still find it here
- Location. Short drive to Ann Arbor, Brighton. Or maybe your spouse works in Lansing and you in metro Detroit. Or your spouse works in Flint and you in Ann Arbor. It is a good central point off I-96 and U-23
With it being a semi-rural area you have probably guessed that there are no gangs, no high rates of cirme. it is a safe city for you to live in. Also there are many recreation areas nearby. You can go to the Pinckney State recreation area or the Brighton Recreation area or Kensington Metro Parks. Thousands of acres of nature to enjoy. There are a few small lakes within the community but you are within a half hour of the Chain of Lakes and many public beaches. So much to do whether you are a hiker, bicycler, fishermen, or bird watcher.
If you are a history buff you will love the Witch's Hat Depot. It functions as a museum and the gathering place for the South Lyon Historical Society. It's distinctive roof line gives the building it's name: The Witch's Hat. The building was moved from the original location on East Lake Street to McHattie Park in 1976 as a bicentennial project and it now serves as the focal point for the historic village. The community has incorporated it into a park area for everybody to enjoy.
As your Michigan relocation specialist would I recommend you to relocate to South Lyon. Absolutely, if the drive is not too bad for you.
