By living in Sylvan Lake, you will have access to many expressways and roads that travel at higher speeds. To the north a few miles is M-59, to the west is I-75, and US 10(telegraph Road). Telegraph Road if you are relocating to Sylvan Lake runs for many miles north and all the way to Toledo. It is a quick moving road with many lights timed to make traveling easy. Reverend John Montieth led an expedition in 1818 into an area that laid between Detroit and the newly established post of Pontiac. The expedition that he led, led to the discovery of a chain of lakes. The lake that laid closest to Pontiac was surrounded by a fringe of tamaracks and was considered to be the most beautiful thing they have seen. The explorers named this body of water Timber Lake, but afterwards was changed to Sylvan Lake. Later on in 1824, the Voorheis family owned a little piece of land, which they farmed on and also built cabins a couple larger homes as well. When the Voorheis family sold their land, a summer hotel was built in Sylvan Lake, which attracted many visitors and future residents. Cottages and a few permanent homes had begun to develop and appear on the shoes of the lake. The first president of the Village was Henry J. Sickle. The village had grown so quickly, they built Whitfield School, which replaced the old school houses that were built before. In the 1940’s Sam and Clark Warwick moved to the streets of Sylvan Lake and started to build custom homes. The Warwick’s built over 300 houses in Sylvan Lake. In the early 1970’s the court ordered busing for children back and forth to school. This caused many families to sell their homes and move. Sylvan Lake’s population dropped significantly in the 1970’s, but has slowly been climbing since that time as more and more people discover the joys and wonders of Sylvan Lake. Sylvan Lake was given the nick name of “The prettiest Little City in the State of Michigan.”

The Memorial Day parade marches from City Hall all the way to the Memorial Park.
