West Bloomfield Township was created by an Act of the Legislative Council on April 22, 1833. It remained a General Law Township up until April 1, 1982 when it became a Charter Township once approved of a simple resolution between the people. The difference between a General Law Township and a Charter Township is that General Law Township taxes cannot be raised without a favorable vote of the electorate, while in a township, you have no say in when and how much the taxes will be raised or lowered. West Bloomfield was founded in 1833 when Bloomfield Township was divided in two, with the western portion becoming what is known today as West Bloomfield.
