Commerce Township is one of your average towns in Oakland County. Very relaxed middle class compared to the rest of Oakland County. Commerce township is away from the hustle and bustle of neighboring cities, allowing for you to be near jobs, but also to be in a quiet neighborhood. Neighborhoods range from old lake cottages, newer lake houses to newer subdivisions with cookie cutter houses. It is a great community in Oakland County. It is a nice place for family living and has many parks and lakes. Almost any activity you need is with 30 minutes or less of driving. It is surrounded by other cities that are very safe. There is no community near it that has a higher crime rate. It is not near Detroit, Inkster, or Pontiac that have higher crime rates than many other cities in Metro Detroit. You can usually look up the crime rates in different cities via FBI crime statistics for many cities in Michigan.
The Township of Commerce is 40 miles southeast of Detroit, just a 45-minute drive. Commerce Township borders on West Bloomfield, White Lake, Milford, Walled Lake, the Village of Wolverine Lake, Novi, Highland, Lyon Township, and Wixom.
In 1998, the M-5 expressway brought new life to the Commerce Township real estate market. For many years, when one would mention Commerce to homebuyers, they would always reply back that it was too far from the expressways. Then in 1998 a new stretch of the M-5 expressway opened up to 14 Mile Road, on the border between Novi and Commerce Township. The expressway is known by some locals as the "Haggerty Connector," referring to the two-lane Haggerty Road which parallels M-5 a half mile to the east. This brought highway access within minutes of Commerce community residents. In addition, a few years ago the M-5 expressway was brought north to Pontiac Trail. Currently they are working on bringing it another mile north to Oakley Park Road.

Commerce MI is a very safe and welcoming place to live. There are plenty of friendly people and nice areas to visit. Wonderful place to live and raise a family. One of the safest areas in metro Detroit. The question of "is Commerce Michigan safe" for my family is a common question when somebody is relocating to Oakland County and considering Commerce Twp. After all a relocation buyer many times has no clue how safe Commerce or any other city is. They rely on HR people, co-workers at the new company and research they find on the internet from websites like this. That is why I try to put out the most current infomation I can find. I know Commerce is a very safe community, but I want to give you facts so you know you are getting reliable information.
Commerce's public schools and nearby colleges are among the best schools in the state of Michigan. As I said before most cities in Metro Detroit are safe and are not crime ridden. Especially the ones I tend to work in. I do not like to go into a city where I have to worry about my vehicle getting stolen or getting car jacked. Nor do I want trouble with the nearby residents when showing a home. I do not want to get shot or robbed just for showing a house. I would rather not even show the house or list the home if I am not safe. Nor do I want to put my clients in that position. Sure I will show you a home in any Metro Detroit city and I will help you sell a home in any metro Detroit city. I just am more aware of my surroundings when I am in areas that are troubled.
