White Lake Michigan is a community in central Oakland County. The city lies along the m-59 corridor. If you go a couple miles north of M-59 you are going to be in farm country. White Lake is not a farming community. It may have a few farms but it has been built up. It's a great little community. I have lived here for ten years now. So I can give you an up close and personal look at the township. First of all White Lake is still coming into it's own.
There are about 31,384 people living in the community. Most of the homes are on well and septic. Though there are some homes on city sewer. It is going to be quite a few years before sewers come to all of White Lake. You can find just about any type of house in the community. There are very few large estate homes. I would say most of the homes range between 1000 square feet to about 2500 square foot. Of course there are many homes that are in the 2500 to 4000 square foot range.
Is White Lake MI a safe place for my family
There is still a lot of undeveloped land both for residential development and commercial development. There are plenty of commercial land that is still yet to be developed but at this time there is not enough residents to support the stores. We have some big box stores in White Lake like Walmart, Meijers, Home Depot, Lowes, JC Penney, and Kohls. We also have a few chain restuarants like Applebees, McDonalds in town too. You are going to find more mom and pop non chain restaurants. You are also not going to find a drug store, party store, or gas station on every corner. It is just not that built up. You are have to drive a little to go shopping or get some of the things you need. It is a way of life here in White Lake.
Downtown Milford is a 15 minute ride, Novi's big shopping area is about 25 minutes away and the Great Lakes shopping area is about 25 minutes too. Brighton is about 20 minutes away. If you have to drive to downtown Detroit, or down in Wayne County living in White Lake may not be for you. It's not a town you should select if you are planning to go downtown for sporting events, or night life all the time. It is just a hour drive downtown and you do not want to drive that far if you are tired or have had a few cocktails. There is so much to do in Oakland County that you do not have to drive that far. However many people drive a distance to work and live in White Lake Township.
White Lake does not have subdivision after subdivision. Nor does it have big apartment complexes or condo complexes. I would say the community is still under developed. I think it is going to take many years for the land to be developed. White Lake is still what I would call semi rural with some homes sitting on acreage. There are many lakes in White Lake.

Not everybody in the township lives on a lake. There are more homes that are not on a lake or do not have lake access rights. The lakes are just a bonus. There are about 21 named lakes. Here is a complete list of the lakes.

When you have that many lakes in the township it makes getting around a little harder. That is one of the biggest negatives to the community. There are very few straight roads because the road system is built around the lakes. We have curvey roads around the lakes. They are usually two lane roads and they can get congested at peak times of the day. Adding to the congestion is the schools on the main roads. We have two high schools on Bogie Lake Road.
White Lake is a very safe community. There are no gangs, no car jackings, no muggings, no drug houses, and no weekly or monthly murder. It just is not that type of town. It is a quiet peaceful town with a good police force. The fire department is very good too. There are three fire stations; Fire Station 1 on Highland Road, Fire Station 2 on Round Lake Road, and Fire Station 3 on Ormond Road.
There are lots of recreational opportunities even off the lake. Highland State Recreation Area is a 5,900-acre state recreation area in White Lake. Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area is located in White Lake Township, and is 3,745 acres in size. Then you have Indian Springs Metro Park with 2,547 acres. Over 10,000 acres to enjoy when you want. You have horse riding trails, lots of hiking trails, biking trails to enjoy. Enjoy this parks on a day trip or you can camp there over night. White Lake is also home to several golf courses. White Lake is a recreation paradise
